Icons Behind Taskbar

Postby rhinox202 » 08 Mar 2010, 17:36

I am using the following code to play games on my HDTV. The first detaches the primary before playing and the second resets the display settings. I am running into a problem where after the settings are reset, icons go behind the taskbar like the attached picture. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way to remedy this? The problem goes away after the computer is restarted. Thanks for your input.

Code: Select all
dc.exe -monitor="\\.\DISPLAY1" -detach -quiet

Code: Select all
dc.exe -monitor="\\.\DISPLAY1" -primary -refresh=60 -more -quiet
dc.exe -monitor="\\.\DISPLAY2" -secondary -right -apply -quiet

The commands look okay. What happens to the icons when you restart Windows? They don't appear in front of the taskbar, do they?

If you want to post the results from "dccmd.exe -listmonitors" for before/after-set/after-restore, that might tell me something. My suspicion is that it's something the game's done with the video or Windows isn't fully "applying" the new setting. You could check to be sure you've got the latest video driver. What version of Windows are you running?

Correct. After restarting the icons do not appear behind the taskbar, as in the previously attached image.

Attached are the listmonitor results of before, during, and after running my script. It can't be a game's fault as I am doing my testing without launching anything. So it may well be Windows not fully "applying" the settings. I am running Windows 7 32bit RTM with the latest Nvidia drivers. Thanks for the quick reply.

I understand that the icons are not displayed behind the taskbar after you restart, but where are they displayed after the restart?

You might try specifying the width and height in addition to the refresh rate, but I don't really think that's it.

Perhaps try an additional command like this:
Code: Select all
dc.exe -apply

After restarting the icons are displayed a row of icons higher than the taskbar. Meaning that another icon can be dragged and placed under it. After dragging an icon below the others, the screen looks like the attached picture. I tried the dc -apply and it doesn't work. Being that I am on Win 7, out of curiousity, would you be able to try it on Vista? I'm wondering if it is a straight Win 7 problem or if it happens in Vista and just went unnoticed. The other thing I was thinking is that some setting must get changed for the icon grid (??) when changing from 1080px high to 1024px high. Anyway, thanks for your help thus far.

I think I've seen something like this on Vista before. It's probably just a question of Windows putting the icons on the grid and neglecting to account for the task bar (until it restarts). DC doesn't change any setting specific to the icon grid. You could try keeping icons further up off the task bar. Windows shouldn't try to move them down then. Basically, arrange your icons as if the screen was at the smaller resolution.
